Snow Shelter

Third Year Bachelor Of Industrial Design Project Brief

The purpose of this project was to create a static object meant for public outdoor use.

I chose to focus on shelters made for snowy park environments to satisfy this brief.

Ideation

Ideation for this project was done through the use of iterative sketching, cardboard modelling, and eventually digital 3D modelling.

From the ideation in the sketching phase of the process, I narrowed the focus of my shelter design to forms emulating snow drifts to better blend in with the natural environments.

Research

The research portion of this project surrounded materials and construction methods for the shelter. The shelter needed snow to adhere to its surface to create a natural snow drift shape.

Tests were conducted with a variety of materials to ascertain the best construction method.

Product

The construction of the final model was done at 1/4 scale, and was made of particle board, canvas, and chickenwire lattice. It demonstrated the effectiveness of the materials to hold snowfall.

The final product of this project took the form of a small tent like structure, meant to emulate natural snowdrifts and integrate into the natural surrounds. The entrance to the shelter was designed to be inviting and provide a cozy environment to encourage users to rest in the peaceful space.
